Competition Stagiaire - Brussels

We are offering a fantastic opportunity for professional, engaging individuals to join our twelve-month stagiaire programme, based in our leading Competition group in Brussels. In line with the usual arrangements in Belgium – the stagiaires will be hired as independent lawyers. Our Competition practice is one of the world’s leading ‘go-to’ competition law practices. The group handles a variety of work types across the competition and regulatory fields. We have an outstanding reputation in merger control, antitrust, competition litigation, market investigations, State aid and regulatory work – often working on precedent-setting, high-profile matters across all types of competition and regulatory law. The Brussels office works on EU, UK and global competition law cases, which would give the stagiaire the opportunity to work on a wide variety of assignments. The group comprises over 100 lawyers based in London, Brussels, Beijing and Hong Kong; they are all specialists in competition and regulatory law. As a stagiaire you would work closely with the lawyers on ongoing matters, in order to give you the best possible insight into our practice. You can expect to be working with a number of trainees, associates, senior counsel and partners at any one time, including colleagues based in other international offices, giving you the opportunity to build relationships across the whole group. You will be allocated a rotating associate/partner mentor who will be your primary supervisor during the programme, and help you navigate the firm and the programme more generally. The key responsibilities of this role – in each case with support from your mentor as required - are set out below: Supporting the legal team on a range of competition law matters. Attending client meetings and events, and drafting attendance notes. Proofreading documents. Developing professional relationships with fee-earners, clients and other members of the Brussels competition law community. Strong academic background and a demonstrable high level of intellectual analysis. LLM in European competition law is preferable. Fluency in spoken and written English. Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals and all levels of staff, including lawyers, executive assistants and business services. Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise work effectively. Desire to work in an international and multi-cultural environment. Previous stagiaire/traineeship with competition authorities, or competition law departments of business or law firms, is valued but not essential. Development & training: The programme’s aim is to develop stagiaires with a view to offering them a permanent associate role once they have become a fully qualified EU lawyer. After a period in Brussels, there will be an opportunity for a short secondment to the competition practice in our London office. This will be a great opportunity to experience the inter-office collaboration between London and Brussels in our competition practice. We run extensive legal and skills training programmes to support all our lawyers at every stage of their career. This includes training focused on competition law and practice as well as more general legal training and business skills training. We welcome applications irrespective of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, belief or marital status.
