About the Role

Join our client's Orion team as a Scrum Master & Senior Developer, where your expertise will drive the digital transformation of critical public services. This freelance mission (13 months, hybrid in Brussels) is your opportunity to architect, code, and lead in a domain that impacts thousands — from supporting victims of terrorism to modernizing national compensation systems. What You'll Be Doing

• Lead the Orion team as Scrum Master, organizing and optimizing Agile workflows for maximum impact.
• Design, develop, and refactor Java-based applications, ensuring code quality and maintainability.
• Drive technical analysis and collaborate with architects to define scalable, secure solutions.
• Implement and run unit, component, and integration tests to guarantee robust, regression-free releases.
• Manage deployments, CI/CD pipelines, and ensure compliance with company standards.
• Proactively identify and resolve technical debt, leaving codebases cleaner than you found them.
• Coach and mentor junior and mid-level developers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
• Communicate clearly with stakeholders, users, and cross-functional teams to align on priorities and deliverables.
• Champion best practices in Agile, DevOps, and software craftsmanship.
• Ensure application security and quality assurance at every stage of the SDLC.

Technical Skills

• Expert-level Java programming and deep knowledge of the Java ecosystem
• J2E stack (ORM/Hibernate, EJB3, web services), Spring Boot, JBoss (asset)
• Advanced SQL querying and database modeling
• REST and SOAP web services
• UML, BPMN for modeling and technical analysis
• DevOps tooling: Git, GitLab, Jenkins CI/CD, IntelliJ, Opengrok, Miro
• Frontend: Angular or ReactJS (expert level)
• Monitoring: Grafana, Prometheus (confirmed level)
• Quality assurance processes and tools

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience as a Senior Java Developer and Scrum Master/Team Lead
• Ownership mindset: proactive, persevering, and driven to add value
• Assertive, open to feedback, and able to communicate clearly with all stakeholders
• Curious, constructive, and motivated to coach and uplift the team
• Ability to work independently and set priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Experience in public sector or state structures is a plus
• Master's degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) is a plus
• Availability to work on-site in Brussels at least 2 days per week (hybrid model)
• Active knowledge of English and French; passive knowledge of Dutch (or vice versa)
• Demonstrated ability to analyze complex situations and propose effective solutions
• Passion for clean code and technical excellence
