Projects and campaigns intern – Paid Internship

Lungs Europe

Lungs Europe is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, and proactive intern to join our dynamic team in Brussels for an initial 6-month paid internship, with the possibility of extension or a follow-on contract.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Healthy Lungs for Life (HLfL) campaign – a global initiative raising awareness of lung health and the importance of clean air, tobacco-free living, and physical activity, as well as the wide range of EU projects the office works on. You’ll gain hands-on experience in public engagement, communications, event delivery, project coordination, and European health policy, while working on meaningful projects that make a real difference to people’s lives across Europe and beyond.

About Lungs Europe

Established in 2019, Lungs Europe unites two leading organisations – the European Lung Foundation (ELF) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) – to advance lung health across Europe. Together, we bring patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers together to influence public health, policy, and research in the respiratory field.

  • ELF is a patient-led organisation that connects patients and the public with respiratory professionals to improve lung health and drive better diagnosis, treatment, and care.
  • ERS is the largest scientific and clinical organisation in respiratory health in Europe, representing clinicians, scientists, and allied health professionals worldwide.

Main Responsibilities

As the Projects and campaigns intern, you will contribute to a range of impactful activities, including:

  • Support the planning, logistics, and delivery of HLfL events and activities across Europe and beyond, including the schools programme and HLfL Grants Programme, which funds community-led initiatives to raise awareness of lung health at the local level.
  • Assist with the coordination and monitoring of grant applications, communication with grantees, and promotion of funded projects.
  • Help develop engaging educational and promotional materials on key lung health topics such as air quality, tobacco cessation, physical activity, and climate change.
  • Support the creation and management of digital and social media content to raise awareness and inspire participation of projects and campaigns.
  • Contribute to newsletter articles, blogs, and project and campaign stories
  • Coordinate with volunteers, suppliers, and partners, including those based in Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Provide administrative and communications support to ensure the smooth and effective delivery of all campaign and project elements.
  • Support on fundraising activities.

Public Engagement and Stakeholder Relations

  • Support efforts to engage new stakeholders – from patient groups and NGOs to policymakers and healthcare professionals – to broaden the campaign’s reach and impact.
  • Assist in organising meetings, workshops, and public events to showcase lung health initiatives and outcomes.
  • Help prepare presentations, briefings, and impact reports demonstrating the value of Lungs Europe’s work.
  • Conduct desk research to identify new collaboration and partnership opportunities.
  • Maintain and update contact databases and project documentation.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A graduate (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as public health, communications, or a related field.
  • Organised, creative, and adaptable, with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • A clear and confident communicator, able to simplify complex health or policy topics for diverse audiences.
  • Skilled in writing, editing, and creating digital content.
  • Familiar with event planning, coordination, and project support.
  • Interested in European health policy, patient engagement, and advocacy.
  • A team player who thrives in a small but international and collaborative environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Fluent in English and highly proficient in Spanish (written and spoken) – essential for this role.
  • Knowledge of other European languages is an advantage.
  • Previous experience in an international or not-for-profit setting is desirable.
