Vice President of European Policy


The VP of European Policy develops and implements, in close coordination with the FIA policy staff and the Head of Europe, the organization’s political and regulatory engagement strategy with elected officials, regulatory agencies and other key policymakers, in each case in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland (together, “Europe”). The position represents the organization in front of key European government officials and policymakers. The VP of European Policy also advises organization executives on the impact of proposed legislation and determines an appropriate response. 

 

The VP of European Policy evaluates pending legislation; surveys legislations’ impact on the organization; develops the organization’s response to legislation; builds relationships with officials in Brussels, London, Germany, France, Geneva, and other key cities and countries in Europe; develops relations with other strategic trade associations and government affairs departments; develops and executes government affairs strategies; enhances the organization’s image among authorities; speaks at conferences hosted by FIA, policy makers and others around the world; and writes testimony, speeches and talking points for the President and other representatives of FIA. The position will help coordinate the selection, hiring and managing of FIA’s outside lobbying consultants for Europe. The VP of European Policy reports to the SVP of Global Policy, with indirect reporting to the Head of Europe.


The VP of European Policy will manage European policy staff on a day to day basis. The role will make sure staff is appropriately coordinated and covering relevant European regulatory issues, as well as running industry working groups and meeting member demands.


The VP of European Policy may also include working with staff and other organizations to obtain media coverage and develop effective public awareness campaigns.  The VP of European Policy will work with the FIA communications team to develop content and information for distribution to FIA membership and on its website. 


It is preferred that the VP of European Policy is principally based in Brussels with some portion of time in the London office, as directed by the President, the SVP of Global Policy and the Head of Europe. The VP of European Policy will be expected to travel to other locations to meet with policy makers and industry officials and to attend and participate in conferences and other events, including FIA events. 


This role will also be expected to be involved with the regulatory strategy of the organization and will coordinate closely with the President, the Head of Europe and SVP of Global Advocacy on the FIA’s regulatory strategy and its implementation. 


 Qualifications:


  • In-depth knowledge and experience with Europe and how policy is made, including specific knowledge of the European Parliament, European Commission and European Council and the UK legal system. 
  • Understanding of the national competent authorities within Europe, ESMA, central banks and other European financial regulatory agencies.
  • Understanding of competent authorities in the UK such as FCA and Bank of England.
  • Understanding of major laws and regulations affecting FIA’s membership, such as EU and UK EMIR and MiFID II/MiFIR.
  • Familiarity with the lobbying laws and regulations in the UK and EU.
  • Strong writer and communication/information gathering skills—requires constant gathering, processing and synthesizing of information from a variety of sources and the ability to communicate the information orally or written in a concise and understandable manner.
  • Must be a team player with a proven record of collaboration and consensus building.
  • Minimum of 10 years of government relations-related work experience or related industry experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and a self-starter.
  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communication.
  • Excellent analytical skills. 
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks / projects and to meet deadlines.


FIA observes a hybrid work environment where employees are required to be in the office every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
