The British Chamber of commerce | EU & Belgium is an independent not-for-profit membership organisation that serves the business interest of its diverse international membership. Our Chamber plays a pivotal role in the development of mutually beneficial policies and activities which support businesses both in the EU and the UK, whilst connecting people, corporations, and institutions. Our purpose is to strengthen the relationship between the UK and the EU, and between the UK and Belgium. We provide a unique platform for international industry, business, and policymakers to discuss the ever-evolving challenges faced by industry in both the European Union and the United Kingdom.


Role Overview:

The Senior EU Policy Officer will lead the development and execution of the BritCham EU policy strategy. This role is crucial in supporting the Chamber’s advocacy work in Brussels and managing relationships with key EU and UK stakeholders, including EU and UK institutions, Member State representatives, and industry experts. 


The role involves significant responsibility for leading the Chamber’s advocacy efforts and drafting position papers, leading policy communications, managing a small team, and representing BritCham with external stakeholders. A strong background in EU affairs in Brussels is essential for success in this role.



Key Responsibilities:

1.        EU Policy Advocacy:

·      Identify and advise on key advocacy opportunities and strategies, and implement advocacy activities aligned with BritCham’s priorities.

·      Monitor and analyse EU policies and regulatory developments that impact European businesses.

·      Lead on policy advocacy efforts and represent BritCham in discussions with relevant stakeholders.

·      Participate in working groups and committees relevant to BritCham’s policy work.


2.        Position Papers and Policy Communications:

·      Draft high-quality position papers, reports, and policy briefs on key issues.

·      Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to gather information and feedback to support policy positions.

·      Develop and implement policy communication strategies to ensure BritCham’s positions are effectively communicated to the EU and UK institutions, the media, and members. Work together with the Events & Communication Officer to implement these strategies in Chamber communications.


3.        EU Policy Council Liaison:

·      Serve as the primary liaison between the BritCham Secretariat and the EU Policy Council.

·      Coordinate regular meetings and ensure that policy matters discussed reflect the concerns and interests of BritCham’s members.


4.        Delegations and Stakeholder Engagement:

·      Lead delegation visits to the European Parliament, the UK Parliament, as well as our EU Presidency Visits as part of BritCham’s advocacy efforts.

·      Build and maintain relationships with key EU and UK stakeholders, including EU and UK officials, policymakers, industry groups, and other chambers of commerce.

·      Build and maintain networks with trade associations, EU officials, other chambers of commerce, and relevant stakeholder groups in Brussels.

·      Manage relationships with key stakeholders in the public affairs and advocacy communities in Brussels.

·      Represent BritCham at events (such as high-level roundtable meetings), meetings with EU institutions, embassies, and other stakeholders as needed.


5.        Team Leadership and Management:

·      Manage and mentor a small team within the Chamber Secretariat.

·      Delegate tasks effectively, ensuring high performance and development within the team.

·      Foster a collaborative environment to ensure that BritCham’s policy work is efficient and impactful.

·      Provide guidance and leadership to team members on policy issues and advocacy strategies.


6.        Strategic Planning:

·      Work closely with the senior management team to implement the strategic direction of BritCham’s EU policy work provided by the Board of Director and the EU Policy Council Leadership.



Qualifications:

·  Education: A Master’s degree in Political Science, EU Studies, International Relations, Law, Economics, or a related field.

·      Experience:

o   Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in EU policy, public affairs, or government relations, preferably in a trade or business organisation.

o   Proven experience in team management, with the ability to motivate and lead a small team effectively.

o   Extensive experience in public affairs in Brussels, with a deep understanding of the EU institutional landscape and the Brussels advocacy environment.

o   Proven experience drafting policy papers, reports, and communication materials targeted at EU decision-makers.


·      Skills:

o   Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (additional languages are an advantage).

o   Ability to think strategically and navigate complex political and policy landscapes.

o   Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

o   Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in stakeholder management.

o   Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
