Language Associate (German)

Part-time Consultant hours/week)

Position Overview

This is an exciting consultant position that offers a unique opportunity to help power  large-scale social change through words. Language Associates bring Avaaz campaigns to life for millions of people each week by translating and  localising our global  campaigns from English into key languages and rewriting them to be fitting to local contexts. You'll be working closely with the German Language Lead and reporting to an Avaaz staffer. This part-time role calls for outstanding writing, translation and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of how to adapt messages for different German-speaking audiences. 

Responsibilities

• Translate and adapt Avaaz campaigns from English into strong emotive, and locally compelling German   for audiences in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
• Proof-read and edit a variety of texts and localise them to fit the context of the DACH region.
• Translate and edit emails, WhatsApp messages and website content using the backend interface and thoroughly test member facing content (including fundraising appeals) before publication.
• Research credible  sources for campaigns(press, NGOs,etc.)  to strengthen campaign content. Monitor the German Avaaz website for language accuracy, tone and functionality
• Contribute ideas to campaign development, testing and messaging to enhance impact
• Support our campaign team with spotting campaign opportunities, researching and drafting campaigns aimed at our German speaking membership (in German).

Skills & Qualities

• Native or excellent written and oral communication and translation skills in German.
• Experience of translating from English to German.
• Deep understanding of linguistic and cultural differences across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, to guarantee Avaaz content can be understood across German-speaking regions.
• Excellent communication skills in English and German
• High professionalism and ability to deliver high-quality work at speed, balancing accuracy, clarity, and impact under intense pressure or periods.
• Strong teamwork skills, comfortable in a highly collaborative culture, and a hierarchical team structure.
• Creativity for campaign tactics,strategies and story telling.
• Passion and commitment to global change, citizen empowerment, and social justice.
• The role involves using our backend system to manage email and WhatsApp campaigns and website updates. Prior experience isn't required, but a strong affinity for digital tools and a meticulous working style are crucial.
• Proficient in Google Suite and online communication systems (Slack, Zoom, etc).

Location

Avaaz is a virtual organization, with most of our work done online. Our staff are based in locations all over the world. For this position, the candidate would ideally be based in the European/Middle East/African time zones.
