Public Affairs & Communications Intern


AESGP is an EU trade association representing manufacturers of self-care products including non-prescription medicines, self-care medical devices and food supplements.


Are you passionate about shaping public perception, engaging with stakeholders, and making a positive impact on the healthcare industry? AESGP is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented, and highly motivated Public Affairs & Communications Intern to join our team for a hands-on and rewarding internship opportunity. 


The successful candidate will contribute to strengthening and expanding AESGP’s governmental, public affairs, and communication activities, supporting its strategic engagement with European Union institutions and key stakeholders in the Self-Care sector. The role requires strong analytical and communication skills, excellent time management, and the ability to work independently while actively integrating feedback. 

The intern will work directly with the Governmental and Public Affairs Director, alongside the Public Affairs Officer, and will also work closely with the Communications Manager to support AESGP’s visibility, content development, and outreach activities. This role provides practical exposure to EU policymaking, advocacy, and professional communications in the selfcare sector. 

Working closely with the AESGP team and its members, you will help raise awareness of the value of Self-Care, contribute to evidence-based policy discussions, and support the development and implementation of AESGP’s public affairs and communication strategies. 

 

Your KEY RESPONSIBILITIES will be: 

  • Support the Governmental and Public Affairs team in day to day governmental and public affairs activities, gaining hands on experience in EU advocacy and stakeholder engagement.  
  • Monitor EU political and legislative developments relevant to healthcare and self-care, including legislative files, policy initiatives, and parliamentary activity.  
  • Assist in the preparation of clear and concise briefing materials, background notes, and policy updates for internal and external audiences.  
  • Contribute to the drafting and editing of written communications, including newsletters, policy updates, position papers, factsheets, and other printable advocacy materials.  
  • Support consultation work by helping identify relevant public consultations and contributing to background research and draft responses.  
  • Assist with stakeholder and parliamentary mapping and help maintain structured contact lists and monitoring tools.  
  • Accompany AESGP representatives to meetings and events when relevant, providing logistical and briefing support.  
  • Support AESGP’s communications activities, including:  
  • Drafting content for AESGP communication channels, including social media posts aligned with public affairs messages (X, Bluesky, LinkedIn), website updates, newsletters or internal updates. 
  • Assisting with website/extranet maintenance, including content updates, uploading documents, or refreshing pages in line with ongoing priorities. 
  • Monitoring policy relevant discussions on social networks and flagging key developments 
  • Supporting the development of communication campaigns, events, and stakeholder engagement, helping prepare materials, coordinate internal inputs, and ensure timely delivery. 
  • Assisting in planning and managing the editorial calendar, ensuring that key advocacy moments, events, publications are reflected in communications. 
  • Maintaining and updating AESGP’s media list and press contacts, ensuring media databases are accurate and up to date, tracking sector‑relevant journalists and outlets, and helping identify new contacts for future press outreach.  
  • Supporting in preparing and coordinating media‑related outreach when relevant. 
  • Participate actively in internal team meetings and take notes or follow up on action points when required.  
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism, including timeliness, appropriate conduct, and responsiveness. 
  • Carry out additional tasks related to governmental affairs, public affairs, or communications, as appropriate and in line with learning objectives. 


Your required QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE should be: 

  • Graduate in health sciences, political sciences, international relations, or a related field. 
  • Strong knowledge of European healthcare policy and the European Union’s legislative processes. 
  • Understanding of the political environment and developments impacting the healthcare sector. 
  • Experience in writing concise, well-structured, and analytical policy documents or communication materials. 

 

Your main SKILLS and ABILITIES should be: 

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize information effectively. 
  • Ability to present complex information clearly and concisely in written, visual, and verbal formats. 
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving and a willingness to take initiative without constant supervision. 
  • Good time management skills – ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines. 
  • High level of professionalism, reliability, and accountability in all work-related responsibilities. 
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to communicate diplomatically. 
  • Fluent in English (oral and written); proficiency in additional EU languages is a plus. 
  • Strong interest or first experience in communications, including digital communications and social media. 
  • Strong IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); familiarity with CMS (WordPress), database management and design skills are a plus.
