Role Summary:
Credit Investments makes direct investments in investment grade and sub-investment grade corporate, structured and real estate debt through a variety of instruments including high yield bonds, convertible bonds, leveraged loans, mezzanine debt & distressed debt. The group is focused on event driven opportunities such as acquisitions, re-financings, recapitalizations, restructurings and stressed situations. The group typically looks to invest in single names where they can deploy $50 - $1000m. At March 31, 2025, CPPIB's Credit Investments department had a portfolio that totaled C$81 billion with a variety of investments across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific. We expect the portfolio to grow significantly over the next five years, especially in the Asia Pacific region.
Accountabilities & Qualifications:
Role Summary
We are recruiting for an Associate or Senior Associate for Credit Investments, APAC Credit with a focus on evaluating sub-investment grade credit investment opportunities, conducting research, developing investment recommendations, participating in the execution of investments, and monitoring investments. The Associate or Senior Associate will play a key role in making and managing both public and private credit investments in the Asia Pacific Region, and will have significant exposure to the leaders of the Credit Investments team.
Role-Specific Accountabilities
Analyze Investment Opportunities:
Review
Research, analyze and evaluate a variety of industries, companies and securities and assist in the overall evaluation process; conduct credit analysis of companies including loan-to-value analysis, preparation of relevant credit metrics including precedent transactions and comparable company analysis
Build dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities (including testing assumptions and sensitivities)
Perform due diligence on companies including past and projected investment performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant factors
Review 3rd party due diligence reports (legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)
Perform valuation analysis of companies and securities, including DCF, precedent transactions and comparable company analysis
Meet with company management teams and review past performance, strategy, outlook, industry issues, and other relevant topics as required
Apply \"Total Portfolio Approach\" as it applies to investments
Recommend
Under the supervision of the APAC Credit leadership team, make credit investment recommendations outlining potential investment opportunities
Assist in presenting investment recommendations to the Credit Investment Committee
Execute Credit Investments
Liaise with investment partners (private equity funds, co-investors, investment banks, credit funds, and corporates) and advisors (financial, legal, etc.)
Assist in negotiating and executing agreements and other transaction-related legal documentation
Manage discreet aspects of the execution of credit investments as directed
Monitor Credit Investments
Review funding and distributions related to credit investments
Monitor ongoing financial performance of portfolio companies
Assist in performing valuation reviews for portfolio companies
On-site company visits to conduct due diligence
Assist in building and leveraging relationships with investment banks, corporations and private equity funds
Attend industry and sector conferences
Build the Team
Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings and investment recommendation meetings
Assist in the training and development of colleagues
Assist in recruiting activities including liaising with universities, networking, sourcing candidates and interviewing prospective hires, as required
Other relevant duties and projects as assigned
Qualifications
3 to 9 years of experience in investment banking, leveraged finance, credit investing, real estate investing or experience in consultancy/advisory – position will be commensurate based on experience
Patient approach to investing with the ability to decline investments that do not fit our process quickly
Language capability: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Exposure to Asian credit markets is preferred
Strong research, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills
Experience in conducting due diligence desirable
Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience, preferably in finance, commerce, or business administration
CFA, CBV or CA designation is considered an asset
Flexibility, adaptability, initiative and sound judgement
Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure
Team player who enjoys a high-performance culture
Willingness to travel
