Welding Engineer


To serve as the primary technical reference within the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) department, ensuring all welding operations meet rigorous national and international standards (both American and European). This role goes beyond routine inspections and training, focusing on the strategic development of procedures, comprehensive documentation management, and expert interpretation of complex regulatory differences.
The Welding Engineer position shall be based out of Tongeren, Belgium and will report to the local Quality Manager. The Welding Engineer will work closely with many different departments, both regionally and globally, as necessary, to conduct training and implement solutions related to welding and weld inspection at the factory level.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Similar to: Master in Welding Engineering (European, i.e. from KU Leuven) or Certification as International Welding Engineer (IWE) or European Welding Engineer (EWE). Lower level certifications like Technologist (IWT) and Specialist (IWS) will be evaluated for the position.
Proficient in GMAW & GTAW welding.
No qualification test required, but must be able to lead hands on demonstrations.
Knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing and Destructive Testing practices.
Ability to obtain CWI by AWS within 18 month of start date.
Knowledge of relevant industry standards and codes (e.g., ASME, AWS, ASNT, EN ISO, Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/UE).
Problem-solving and analytical skills.
Strong communication skills, capable of developing and delivering effective training programs for welders and inspectors, ensuring the team's skills are current and comply with standards.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proven ability to create, qualify, and maintain essential welding documentation, including Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) records.
Ability to collaborate with engineering and production teams to resolve complex welding issues in real-time, perform failure analyses, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Skilled in planning and conducting quality control activities, analyzing NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) results (VT, PT, MT, UT, RT), and implementing corrective actions for non-conformities.
Expertise in analyzing and reconciling the differences between various international codes, ensuring seamless compliance for projects operating under different regulatory frameworks.
Additional Skills (Desirable)
AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
IIW certification as (international Welding Inspector) IWI-S or IWI-C.
ASNT Level II or higher in any of the following disciplines: VT, PT, LT, and/ or ET.
Similar to: EN ISO 9712 certification of PND Level 2 for following sectors : VT, PT, LT, and/ or ET
