Purpose and Scope of the Job Purpose: Legal Specialist/Senior Legal Specialist provides integrated legal advice and service on legal issues which are of strategic importance to the organization, including in areas of governance, risk mitigation, financial management, external compliance, campaign litigation and consequential legal cases. The post-holder is expected to apply rigorous legal expertise and strategic thinking to tasks that are often complex and instrumental to the organization's resilience and success. Scope of the Job: The post-holder may be asked to provide legal support to specific offices in Greenpeace East Asia (GPEA) which operates in Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo, and to take on strategic legal tasks and projects which are regional in nature. Job Responsibilities Take leadership roles in tackling legal tasks or undertaking legal projects which are of strategic importance to the organization, including in areas of governance, risk mitigation, financial management, external compliance, campaign litigation and consequential legal cases. Provide support to the Head of Legal Unit in addressing legal challenges within the region and legal support to specific offices in GPEA. Knowledge management: Develop and manage information on all jurisprudence favourable to Greenpeace, as well as proactive legal action conducted by Greenpeace or others. Maintain and develop a legal case database, tracking updated laws, regulations, and cases valuable to Greenpeace's work. Provide regular training/sharing to staff members in EA, as well as to activists and allies in civil society, to enhance the organisation's resilience. Provide legal support in the event that activities result in legal consequences, and identify opportunities to turn such threats into platforms to advance campaign goals. Lead and manage the development and implementation of legal strategies for major pending litigation involving GPEA entities. Job responsibilities Work closely with GPEA program teams to develop strategic legal elements of campaign projects. Develop legal strategies and tactics by utilising laws and legal proceedings to support Greenpeace campaigns. Participate in discussions on legislative proposals and provide relevant professional insights to advance the progress of related legislation in accordance with the organisation's needs. Strengthen the partnership with internal and external lawyers and the legal community to deliver meaningful results for the environment, health and communities in East Asia jurisdictions; cultivate new allies and coalition partners to advance campaign work and file/support strategic litigation cases; create synergy with the campaign under the legal framework of national law and international law. Ensure that external lawyers and partners are provided with adequate instruction, information, and professional legal services to better serve the goals of the Greenpeace campaign. Provide legal advice and legal review on Greenpeace program-related publications and communications materials. Conduct legal risk assessments of campaign activities, NVDA that may pose legal risk and advise on how to mitigate risk without compromising campaign impact.
