Pay: 600,000 - 1M RMB ($80k - $135k)

Role Description: Build the world's best smart glasses. Own manufacturing, run the hardware team (MD, NPI, EE), communicate with suppliers, ship 100,000s of hardware units by the end of 2026. This is a high ownership position.
Mentra is building MentraOS, the open source operating system for smart glasses. Smart glasses hardware is finally reaching consumer-ready quality, but the software ecosystem is missing. MentraOS fills this gap as the app store and SDK for smart glasses. We're building the OS to power the next 8 billion personal computers and upgrade human intelligence.
We've raised capital from the founder of Android, founder of YouTube, Paul Graham, YC, and others. Our founding team brings deep expertise in smart glasses technology, with 6+ years of experience, 6 months in Shenzhen manufacturing, and roles at MIT Media Lab and Steve Mann's lab (the inventor of smart glasses + smart watch).
To kickstart MentraOS, we're building the world's best smart glasses. We make 2 pairs:
Mentra Live - record video, snap photos, live stream. WIth camera, mics, speaker. Shipping February 13, 2026.
Mentra Nex - see subtitles in real-life overlaid on your vision - for the 400M people who wear hearing aids everyday. WIth display, microphone. Shipping June 2026.
As we push forward on these two hardware projects, we need a core team member to lead the hardware time, help us stay on timeline from prototype to EVT, DVT, PVT, and MP, maintain information flow and work between Mentra, suppliers, and our hardware design partners. Someone to go to a supplier and push the timeline, open the new CAD and make sure everything is manufacturable, make sure drawings get from the engineer to the tooling house, feet on the floor setting up a new assembly line, fighting for priority from overcommitted suppliers, managing and translating meetings between ID and MD to get designs locked in, and just doing what needs to get done to ship a hardware product. You are the feet on the ground daily managing the hardware projects, working directly under the CEO. You'll lead hardware execution across both - from early design to mass production - and own delivery of next-gen wearable hardware.
This job is full time in Shenzhen, China. Mentra has a company apartment and office in Shenzhen. You will work at the office and optionally can live for free at the Mentra Shenzhen apartment.
The Head of Hardware is one of the top positions at Mentra, working directly under the CEO. You'd have the opportunity to grow from leading a team of ~5 internal, 5 external (ODM) employees to leading 25+ people in the next 24 months.
You'll own:
End-to-end hardware program management: concept → MP
Proto, EVT, DVT, PVT, MP leader
Fluent in English and Mandarin
Coordination with ID, ME, EE, FW, and CM/ODM teams
Fluency speaking about and working with all of these teams/areas of technology
Shenzhen vendor management: tooling, PCBA, optics, mechanical
BOMs, DFM feedback, sample QA, factory debugging
Close collaboration with product, design, and software
Driving timelines and build quality to world-class levels
Love smart glasses, working hard, and having fun

3+ yrs building/managing consumer electronics, ideally wearables
Experience/fluency across mechanical, ID, manufacturing, NPI
Experienced enough in EE and firmware to manage team
Shipped a complex device (audio, glasses, ring, etc.)
Fluent in Mandarin and English
Driven daily, detail-obsessed, execution-driven, factory-native
Bonus: experience with optics or displays, BD experience in China
