Part-Time Teacher of Additional Educational Needs


Starting April 2026

The AEN Department:

The Additional Educational Needs department in the Secondary School sits within the wider Student Support Faculty and is led by the Faculty Leader who is also the Head of AEN. The team consists of 2 AEN teachers, several Learning Mentors and Learning Support Assistants who work with students from ages 11 – 18 years. Staff work closely with mainstream class teachers, students, families, care guidance and support team, student services and external agencies.

The role:

The position will be for one year in the first instance. Possibilities regarding the extension of the contract will be discussed at interview.

The ideal candidate will:

– have a degree in Special Education or a related field

  • be a qualified teacher with a minimum of 2 years teaching experience

  • have previous experience working with children with Additional Educational Needs (AEN)

  • have experience of building strong and trusting relationships with students, families and colleagues

  • plan and deliver high-quality, engaging lessons, tailored to individual needs

  • monitor, assess and record progress, providing constructive feedback and adapting lessons accordingly

  • be willing to help develop teaching resources and contribute to the development of the support provision and vision of the department

  • be committed to professional growth and learning and also with supporting the professional learning of colleagues

  • have a passion for helping students to find confidence, joy and success in learning

Desirable, to be able to assist with:

  • the administration of updating student files, AEN Register, documentation, etc.

  • the assessment of students, planning, implementation and review of support

  • exam access arrangements (testing, gathering evidence, completing documentation, making applications to exam boards, etc.)

  • interpreting, communicating and applying psycho-educational evaluations and recommendations

  • knowledge and/or experience of UK National Curriculum, International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and BTEC coursework

  • patience, empathy and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • high standards of personal integrity and professionalism
  • solution focused and excellent organisational skills
  • a sense of humour

Short listed candidates will be invited to interview at the school the week of 9 March 2026 and this process will include a sample lesson and opportunities to meet potential colleagues.
