About the Role

We are seeking a Power BI Architect (Freelance) to lead a high-impact modernization project for our client, a major organization transitioning its data and analytics platform to Microsoft Azure Cloud. This is a unique opportunity to architect and implement a next-generation Power BI environment, leveraging Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data Services, and to set the standards for data-driven excellence. Your expertise will directly shape the future of data reporting, governance, and business intelligence for a mission-critical platform.

Key Responsibilities

• Design the Power BI architecture (workspaces, shared datasets, governance) within the Azure Cloud ecosystem.
• Implement and configure the Power BI platform, including workspaces, licensing, gateways, and capacity management, fully integrated with the Azure-based data warehouse and Microsoft Fabric ETL feeds.
• Establish and enforce security protocols in line with organizational governance and data classification, including Row-Level Security, Azure AD authentication, and protection of sensitive/confidential data.
• Set up comprehensive monitoring for execution times, dataset usage, user activity, and report performance.
• Enable multilingual capabilities, publication workflows, version control, and full report lifecycle management.
• Define and document standards for dataset modeling and advanced DAX development to optimize performance.
• Ensure optimal performance, integrity, stability, scalability, and cost efficiency for all reporting and datasets.
• Integrate existing metadata management tools (such as DataGalaxy) into the new Power BI architecture.
• Establish technical standards for naming conventions, security, governance, monitoring, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate closely with the Microsoft Fabric Architect to align Power BI models with Kimball/Snowflake star schemas in the data warehouse.
• Work in partnership with cross-functional teams (ICT, Cloud Center of Excellence, Security, Data Protection) to ensure platform consistency and compliance.
• Document the architecture and deliver training to ICT teams, including BI, CCOE, and solution architects.

Technical Skills

• Expertise in Power BI Desktop & Service (datasets, reports, dashboards)
• Proven experience with Azure Data Services
• Advanced tabular modeling and dataset optimization in the cloud
• Demonstrated experience setting up Power BI cloud reporting platforms based on Azure data warehouses with Microsoft Fabric ETL feeds
• Implementation of publication, security, and monitoring in Power BI
• Practical knowledge of data warehouse concepts (Kimball, Inmon, DataVault modeling) and data governance
• Experience with multilingual reporting and publication in Power BI
• Advanced DAX, Power Query, and SQL skills
• Row-Level Security and data governance in Power BI and Azure
• Integration of Power BI with Microsoft Fabric/Azure and other data sources
• CI/CD for Power BI (Azure DevOps or GitHub)
• Familiarity with Sparx Enterprise Architect for documentation (a plus)
• Knowledge of SAP BI (a plus)

Language Proficiency

• Fluency in either French or Dutch, with strong passive understanding of the other language (required)
• Active knowledge of English

Other Requirements

• Master's degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
• Minimum 7 years of professional experience with Power BI on Azure Cloud (installation, configuration, implementation, modeling)
• Excellent communication and training skills
• Strategic vision and a focus on optimization
• Strong team collaboration abilities
• Ability to work full-time or part-time for the 2-month project duration (30 man-days)
• Hybrid work model (onsite in Brussels and remote)
• This is a freelance position with a defined project duration
