YOUR TASKS

This vacancy concerns a position for a postdoctoral researcher in the context of a multidisciplinary project to classify materials in waste streams, including using X-rays. The goal is to optimally use the spectral capacities of a new generation of X-ray detectors to classify different metals within a mixed waste stream.

To achieve this, both 'conventional' photon-counting and hyperspectral X-ray detectors will be evaluated, fully exploiting the complementarity of both types. Specifically, you'll be performing the following tasks:

  • You set up a simulation framework for both conventional photon-counting and hyperspectral X-ray detectors with high-Z sensors.
  • You validate this framework for a few specific detectors.
  • You use this framework to perform a thorough sensitivity study
  • You use this framework to generate input data for material classification, based on experimental data which you acquire.
  • You publish the research results in scientific journals and present at international conferences
  • You contribute to the supervision of master and PhD students

At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above-mentioned required diploma) in the fields of physics, engineering or equivalent.
  • You have experience with experimental setups for high-resolution X-ray imaging and their applications
  • You have good programming skills for image processing, image analysis and/or hardware control.
  • You are eager to learn, can work independently and have a creative and solution-driven mindset
  • You have an excellent track record concerning scientific publications and presenting research results on the topic of photon-counting X-ray detectors and/or their applications.
  • Experience in supervising master and PhD students is a plus
  • You have a good command of English, both spoken and written

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 30 months
  • Your contract will start on 1/04/2026 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale PD1. Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers..
