Software Engineer – Energy Management System (EMS)

We are looking for a Software Engineer – Energy Management System (EMS) with hands-on experience in designing, integrating, and operating EMS platforms that control real-world energy assets. This role focuses on asset integrations, control logic, monitoring, and reliability, across both cloud (AWS) and edge-deployed EMS software.

Octave is a cleantech scale-up on a mission to deploy advanced energy management and storage solutions for commercial and industrial customers.

Your Role

  • Design, develop, and maintain EMS integrations with on-site energy assets, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), EV chargers, PV inverters or Energy meters and other site equipment
  • Implement and maintain communication using EMS-relevant protocols such as Modbus (TCP/RTU), MQTT, and REST APIs.
  • Ensure every integrated asset is properly monitored, including Asset state and measurements; Communication health and fault detection; data quality and consistency checks
  • Develop and improve EMS control logic, such as EV charging load balancing and power allocation; Coordination of batteries, PV, and loads to minimize grid import; Site-level constraints, priorities, and fallback strategies
  • Contribute to the evolution of the Octave EMS, running in AWS and on edge devices deployed on customer sites.
  • Thoroughly test, validate, and debug EMS behavior in realistic scenarios, interpret results, and ensure stable long-term operation in production.

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 2 years of experience in software development.
  • Proven experience working on Energy Management Systems (EMS) or closely related energy control platforms.
  • Strong experience delivering production-grade Python software.
  • Hands-on experience integrating and controlling physical energy assets via industrial or IoT protocols.
  • Solid understanding of monitoring, observability, and fault handling in systems that interact with hardware.
  • Experience working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of EMS components, and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Clear communication skills in English.

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with commercial or industrial energy systems (BESS, EV charging infrastructure, PV plants, metering).
  • Experience designing EMS control strategies under grid, site, or contractual constraints.
  • Experience developing software for edge or embedded Linux devices.
  • Experience with AWS.
  • Familiarity with field commissioning, on-site testing, or remote troubleshooting of EMS deployments.
  • Experience working closely with energy engineers, operations teams, or asset vendors.

What’s in it for you

A highly impactful role where your software directly controls and optimizes real-world energy systems. You will work on a production EMS used in the field, solving concrete challenges at the intersection of software, hardware, and energy markets, while contributing to the transition to a more sustainable energy system.

We also offer

  • An attractive salary package.
  • A nice office in Mechelen.
  • Flexible working hours with hybrid working (2–3 days in the office, 2–3 days remote).
  • A collaborative team environment with strong learning and growth opportunities in a fast-growing cleantech scale-up.

Why join Octave

Founded in April 2020, Octave is a Belgian cleantech company specialized in battery energy storage and energy management services for businesses. Octave has sold over 120 MWh of battery energy storage capacity and operates the largest fleet of behind-the-meter batteries in Belgium. Backed by private investors, Imec, and the EIC Accelerator of the European Commission, Octave is working on large-scale projects at the forefront of technology and sustainability.
