Head of Software Engineering (EU Remote)

Our client is a global leader in testing services industry, providing a comprehensive range of solutions across multiple industries, including food, environmental, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic testing.

The Head of Software Engineering can be based in any of the following EU cities and requires minimal presence onsite: France (Nantes), Belgium (Brussels), Portugal (Lisbon), Spain (Barcelona). Other locations in EU can be considered if close to one of our client's sites.

The Compensation Package includes a base salary up to 150K Euros (based on location and experience), a bonus, a company car, a health insurance and a pension scheme.

Role Overview:

The Head of Software Engineering leads all engineering teams including software architects, developers, and testers, ensuring timely, high-quality technical delivery aligned with business objectives. Key responsibilities include managing hiring, establishing standards (e.g., Definition of Ready, unit test coverage), overseeing architecture, and ensuring on-time delivery across multiple projects.

This role involves mentoring engineers, defining technical strategies, coordinating with product and leadership teams, and guiding decisions on tooling, scalability, and performance. Collaboration with product management and operations/support teams is essential, alongside contributing to the DevOps approach and evaluating service operations on a CI/CD platform.

Focusing on people leadership, the Head of Software Engineering sets long-term platform evolution in alignment with company strategy and reports to the IT Solution Program Director.

Key Experience and Skills:

• Bachelor or master’s degree in computer science, engineering or related field
• Mandatory experience as a professional software developer after finishing BSc/MSc degree
• 8+ years of experience in software engineering and team leadership. Proven experience scaling engineering teams and processes, especially in the context of remote and distributed crews, over many delivery centers in different countries and regions.
• Deep understanding of IT architectures and software design patterns acquired through proven experience in developing and delivering software at scale, ideally within a software vendor or product company environment.
• Deep understanding of multi-tenant architectures, versioning strategies, and client-specific customization in complex enterprise systems.
• Ability to align technical delivery with product and business goals with experience in client engagement, custom solution delivery, or in managing client-specific roadmaps. This in close collaboration with product management to balance core platform evolution with client-specific needs.
• Confidence in managing people, individual and team performance including experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or Value Stream Mapping to drive measurable improvements.
• Skilled in leading code reviews, tooling selection, and QA standards
• Experience in engineering transformation, process reengineering, or technical debt reduction
• Strong communication skills for working with stakeholders and leadership
