The British Junior Academy of Brussels (BJAB) is located in the diplomatic residential area of Brussels and the diverse intake is reflected in our proximity to the main institutions of the EU, major NGOs and offices of multinational companies. Our reputation, since 1992, as a high-quality provider of the National Curriculum of England is recognised in the community. BJAB is proud to be a part of COBIS (Council of British International Schools) and IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools). The school was inspected in 2022 by ISI and judged to be 'Excellent' in all areas; since the change in framework, we have successfully completed a further 2025 ISI inspection in which the school met all British School Overseas (BSO) standards. Students sit Cambridge Checkpoint Tests at the end of Year 9 in English or EAL, Mathematics, Science and Global Perspectives. At the end of Year 11, they sit Cambridge IGCSE exams, our first cohort sitting their exams in Spring and Summer, 2026.

In September, 2026 we will welcome our first cohort into Year 12; we are currently in the rigorous process of IB Diploma accreditation, which we will offer all students in Year 12.

The school already has an excellent record of feeding pupils into top European and British independent schools including Eton, Thomas's Battersea, Westminster, Magdalen College, St Mary's Ascot and James Allen's Girls School, and continues to attract high calibre British and international families.

Our ethos is grounded in providing a safe, caring, respectful, tolerant and disciplined environment where high standards prevail in all areas of school life. The school has approximately 300 pupils and a teaching staff of 46.

We are seeking a dedicated Learning & Support Assistant (LSA) to join our team. The primary responsibility of the LSA will be to work closely with teaching staff in the classroom, providing invaluable support and guidance to ensure optimal learning experiences for all pupils. Additionally, they will play a crucial role in assisting pupils with learning support (LS) needs, helping them access the curriculum and providing general support to the teacher. This role will also provide support for the school, undertaking duties and assisting our after-school garderie programme. The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic and committed individual who is passionate about education and dedicated to supporting pupil's learning journeys.

General responsibilities

Supporting Pupils:

  • Attend to the personal needs of LS pupils, ensuring their safety, well-being, and access to learning.
  • Build positive relationships with all pupils, promoting inclusion and acceptance while responding to individual needs.
  • Encourage LS pupils to engage with others, participate in activities, and follow instructions.
  • Assist LS pupils with literacy, numeracy, and basic ICT tasks as directed by the teacher.
  • Prepare and maintain resources, providing support in their use.

Supporting Teachers:

  • Demonstrate flexibility in meeting the needs of LS children, aiding in their development and implementing IPs.
  • Provide in-classroom support as per teacher instructions.
  • Foster effective communication regarding pupils, sharing their progress, achievements, and challenges.
  • Assist teachers in managing pupil behaviour and maintain accurate records as requested.

Supporting the School:

  • Ensure the health, safety, security, and confidentiality of all pupils, promptly reporting concerns.
  • Promote equal access to learning and development opportunities for all students.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos and aims of the school community.
  • Attend staff meetings, engage in training and professional development activities.
  • Support pupil supervision according to the school duty rota.
  • Assist in the successful management of our after-school garderie.
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on off-site visits and activities as required.

Experience / Qualifications

  • Previous experience working within a busy college, school or nursery environment, preferably an international school, private school or creche or previous experience working with/caring for children of a relevant age
  • Native level or near-native level mastery of English
  • UK or Belgian childcare/nursery training (certificate or degree)
  • Legal working permission in Belgium (no permit sponsorship is available for this role)

Knowledge / Skills

  • Use technology – computer, video, photocopier, IWB
  • Effective use of ICT skills to support learning
  • Ability to relate well to children and adults
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and GDPR requirements
  • Work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities
  • Understanding of relevant policies and code of practice
  • General understanding of national/foundation phase and other basic learning strategies and programmes
  • Experience with Special Education Needs (SEN) would be an advantage

The British Junior Academy of Brussels

was founded in 1992 to offer a high quality English-speaking education to children aged 3 to 16 years old. The school caters for families from the expatriate, commercial and diplomatic communities, reflecting the mix of nationalities that one would expect to find in an international centre such as Brussels.

BJAB spans two sites in the European Quarter of Brussels. Our Lower School houses classrooms for pupils from Early Years to Year 4, while our Upper School is used by Years 5 through Year 11. We are expanding our offering to include Year 13 by September 2027.

The educational programme is based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales, with adaptations to reflect our location in the heart of Europe. Daily French lessons are an integral part of our timetable from the Reception Year upwards, as are weekly swimming and physical education lessons. We pride ourselves on being able to offer small teaching groups throughout the school. With class sizes of around 18 pupils, we are able to provide a high degree of individual attention to each child.

The Headteacher, Mr Francis Retter, is committed to the maintenance and development of the best educational opportunities across the curriculum for all pupils.
