YOUR TASKS

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in the research group Data-integration and Network Biology of the Department of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. The research focuses on developing innovative bioinformatics methods to address biological questions through the integration of molecular data
  • You will assist in teaching activities at the Bachelor's or Master's level. More specifically, you are co-responsible for teaching bioinformatics and for coordinating and supervising practical sessions and tutorials in bioinformatics, within the framework of the 'Bachelor in Biochemistry and Biotechnology' and the 'Master in Bioinformatics' programs. You also contribute to the renewal of course content and the implementation of active learning strategies grounded in research activities in (AI-based) bioinformatics (research-based education)
  • You will assist in coordinating the 'Master in Bioinformatics' program. You contribute to representing the Master's program in Bioinformatics at information sessions (such as SID-in days and information events)
  • You will counsel Master's students in the context of internships, design projects, and Master's dissertations. You also act as (co-) chair of Master's dissertations and internship defenses
  • You will counsel doctoral students

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a doctoral degree preferably Doctor of Science, or Doctor of Engineering, or Doctor of Bioscience Engineering with a specialization in bioinformatics or computational biology or in a subject relevant by the selection committee. The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted

  • You have already conducted research in the field of bioinformatics (specifically in the areas of data integration, network biology and/or modelling of protein interactions, preferably with a focus on the development of computational methods and/or AI-based methods)

  • Good programming skills and mathematical insights are a prerequisite
  • You are interested in identifying and exploring emerging domains and working across disciplines

  • You have distinguished yourself as a promising researcher during your doctorate

  • You are profoundly interested in coaching students in the Bachelor's, Master's and/or Advanced Master's programmes
  • You can present relevant scientific publications in (inter)national peer-reviewed academic journals that are widely disseminated

  • You are fluent in written and spoken English

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a temporary appointment of 3 years. A second appointment of up to 3 years can follow, subject to a favourable evaluation of the first term
  • Even if you have already been appointed earlier (whether or not at another university and whether or not in the same field of discipline) in a first term of up to three years, you can apply
  • The second appointment does not have to be immediately connected to a first term
  • Your appointment will start on 1 March 2026 at the earliest
