Application Engineer Large Scale

Based in Mechelen, SMA Benelux is a subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology. We are looking for a highly skilled and technically proficient Application Engineer for the Large Scale segment to join our dynamic sales and service subsidiary. In this critical role, you will leverage your engineering expertise to provide advanced technical support and strategic guidance to our customers, significantly contributing to their plant design and optimization. You will also serve as a key technical advisor to the SMA Sales team, ensuring the successful integration of our cutting-edge products and solutions. Beyond customer engagement, you will be instrumental in developing and delivering comprehensive product and technology training programs, both internally and externally.



Main Missions:

  • Provide expert-level technical support and engineering consultation to SMA's customers and Distribution Partners, resolving complex technical challenges and optimizing system performance.
  • Collaborate closely with the SMA Sales team on solar and storage projects across residential, commercial, and utility-scale segments, offering in-depth technical analysis and solution design.
  • Lead technical discussions and provide engineering support for utility-scale solar and storage project inquiries, including detailed plant design optimization, medium voltage (MV) system integration requirements, and grid connection compliance.
  • Coordinate with SMA Product Managers and UK/IRE grid regulation bodies to proactively ensure all product certification and compliance requirements are met, contributing to a smooth product rollout and market acceptance.
  • Contribute technical content and expertise to sales and marketing initiatives such as product launches, exhibitions, roadshows, product positioning, and deliver insightful expert talks and technical presentations.
  • Design, develop, and deliver advanced technical training courses for customers and employees, both in-house and on-site, fostering a deeper understanding of our technology.
  • Develop comprehensive training material content that aligns with current market requirements, emerging technical trends, and best engineering practices.
  • Engineer and implement strategic content plans and training schedules to ensure the continuous technical development of our partners and internal teams.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering with several years of hands-on experience in an electrical engineering environment.
  • Minimum of three years of progressive experience in a pre-sales engineering role or an equivalent position demonstrating strong technical problem-solving and solution design capabilities.
  • In-depth technical knowledge of the UK electricity market, photovoltaics, battery storage systems, EV chargers, and their associated monitoring and control systems is highly desirable.
  • Proven expertise in configuring and simulating solar/storage plants using industry-standard software such as PV-Syst, PV*Sol, SunnyDesign, or similar engineering tools.
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office applications, particularly PowerPoint and Excel, for data analysis, presentation, and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated strong engineering acumen, a solutions-oriented mindset, and excellent customer-facing technical communication skills. Highly motivated and capable of autonomous work.
  • Fluency in Dutch and English (written and oral) is essential; proficiency in French is a significant asset.
  • Ability to travel frequently within the Benelux and occasionally to Western European countries for customer engagements, training, and technical support.
  • Proven ability to manage a diverse and technically complex workload, prioritizing and executing multiple engineering tasks simultaneously.
  • Flexibility, dynamism, and the ability to seamlessly transition between diverse engineering and technical support roles are key for success in this exciting position.
