Junior/Medior AI/ML Project Engineer

About us

Orise Manufacturing AI (formerly: Yazzoom) is a team of skilled AI/ML software specialists. We are based in Ghent, Belgium, and a part of Digital Business Unit of the global automation, digitalization, and consultancy powerhouse Orise.

We specialize in delivering AI-driven research and software solutions that help our customers optimize their production processes. Alongside our custom AI and computer vision projects, we’ve developed Orise Digital AI (formerly known as Yanomaly), a cutting-edge software tool for anomaly detection and predictive analytics on machine-generated data.

For over 14 years, our team of talented professionals has been pushing the boundaries of innovation, consistently delivering value to clients across industries. As we expand and internationalize, we are looking for new colleagues that want to grow together with us.

About the job

We are looking for a junior or medior AI/ML project engineer to join our data science team and contribute to our client-focused projects on Yanomaly and custom AI. You will learn about and use our software Yanomaly, its in-house developed algorithms and scalable software architecture for processing huge amounts of data in real-time. You will use various ML / AI / data science libraries and work on a variety of applications. Next to the standard AI/ML libraries, you will get to learn about various state of the art technologies including Elastic, Kafka, Kubernetes and Luigi. Finally, you will have the exciting opportunity to look behind the scenes of our many industrial customers from various sectors, including (petro-) chemical, pharma and biotech, paper and pulp, automotive, metallurgy and food-and-beverage.

Here’s a selection of some projects where we’ve built software solutions for our customers:

  • AI-based biometric signature verification for a mobile payment platform
  • Automatic sorting of onions based on computer vision and AI
  • Predictive modelling of prices and probability of winning second-hand cars in an online auction using AI
  • Predictive modelling of failures in production processes using AI
  • Vision-based detection of assembly mistakes in aluminum profiles
  • Optimizing and controlling in real-time the use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants based on predictions of the evolution of electricity prices to help maintain the balance on the electric grid
  • Detecting anomalies in a variety of industrial processes: chemical processes, assembly lines, combined heat and power (CHP) plants, paper machines, … using unsupervised AI algorithms

Your responsibilities

As part of the team, you’ll sharpen and expand your skills in data science and software engineering. Your day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Applying your data science expertise and the Orise Digital AI algorithms to real-world industrial or IoT data: pre-processing, cleaning, training, and evaluating anomaly detection and predictive models in Jupyter notebooks or in the UI of Orise Digital AI.
  • Communicating results to clients, gathering their feedback, and refining your work accordingly.
  • Enhancing algorithms in our scalable big-data platform for AI-based anomaly detection and predictive modeling.
  • Developing and implementing AI/ML solutions for various data types (timeseries, tabular, etc.).
  • Creating Proof of Concepts in notebooks and integrating algorithms into customer workflows, including training and support.
  • Interfacing with diverse data sources via connector pipelines (SQL, Elasticsearch, Kafka, REST APIs, etc.).
  • Tuning algorithms and data pipelines for optimal performance when required.

Your profile

You tick the following boxes:

  • Proficiency in Python and its data science stack (pandas, scikit-learn, Jupyter, Luigi, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of data mining and machine learning. Experience with optimization algorithms is a plus.
  • A passion for writing clean, maintainable, and robust code.
  • A Bachelor’s or master’s degree in AI/ML, Computer Science, Bioengineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • Fluency in English or Dutch (spoken and written).
  • Bonus skills: familiarity with Kafka, Elastic, Grafana, or Linux scripting.
  • A drive to learn and apply new technologies to solve real-world problems, with an interest in industrial production processes.
  • A driver’s license and flexibility for occasional travel within Belgium and internationally.

What we offer

At Orise, you’ll join an innovative and fast-growing company at the forefront of AI and ML advancements. Here’s what you can expect:

  • A stimulating environment with diverse projects, endless learning opportunities, and room for growth
  • We provide the opportunity for training and, where appropriate, supervision by experienced senior colleagues. However, we expect you to hit the ground running and start coding from the first week.
  • In this job, you will never get bored. This is a job with a lot of variety. We offer the opportunity to grow with the company if you want and fit the requirements.
  • Direct access to decision-makers and flexible working hours without rigid hierarchies
  • A supportive team of smart professionals who value hard work, innovation, and celebrating success
  • We give a lot of confidence to our employees and expect them to use it wisely.
  • We work hard but we also take time to celebrate success and have fun.
  • You will get to work in a winning team of smart professionals with diverse backgrounds (not only computer science) on a variety of challenging projects.
  • A competitive remuneration package, including perks like a company car or free public transport, a wage bonus, meal vouchers, retirement fund contributions, a flex income plan, and a generous training budget

Where are we located?

The main location and base for this job is our office in The Office, Moutstraat 88, Gent (optionally one day per week working from home) - about 10 minutes from the Sint-Pieters train station by bike, and a few minutes from the E17 motorway. Occasional travel to our customers is required: usually half or one day visits, and rarely several days in a row.

If you’re ready to take on this exciting challenge, send us your resume and a brief cover letter!
