The use of mobile energy from batteries has become an essential part of everyone’s life. Batteries are changing the world we live in, from tiny batteries in smart watches to large batteries powering electric vehicles. Our client, EUCOBAT, is the European association of national collection schemes for waste batteries. EUCOBAT represents national compliance schemes for waste batteries and helps its members organize the collection, re-use and recycling of waste batteries as easily and efficiently as possible. Founded in 2011, EUCOBAT now counts 30 members in 24 countries across Europe, as well as in Canada and Australia.
For our client, we are looking for an experienced Communications Director who will support the circular economy and help shape and execute EUCOBAT’s communication strategy. You will play a key role in positioning EUCOBAT and its members as a trusted voice in battery sustainability, policy, compliance and the circular economy.
The ideal candidate combines strategic communication judgment with hands-on execution and translates complex EU policy topics into clear messages.
In the position of Communications Director, you report directly to the Secretary General. The office is located in Brussels, Belgium.
The role
- Support and execute EUCOBAT’s communication strategy in line with EU sustainability, battery and regulatory priorities.
- Strengthen EUCOBAT’s visibility and role in European battery, circular economy, environmental policy and compliance discussions.
- Manage EUCOBAT’s external communication channels, publications and digital presence, including the website, social media, newsletters and other member or stakeholder communications.
- Support content creation across channels and translate complex regulatory or technical topics into clear, accessible and credible messages.
- Manage relationships with members, partners, media, external agencies and relevant stakeholders.
- Oversee campaigns, reports, publications and event communications.
- Support and maintain EUCOBAT’s internal platform to facilitate communication within the association.
- Support Board and General Assembly meetings, including relevant communication and preparation of materials where needed.
- Organize and support internal and external international events, including the communication around these events.
- Work closely with the Secretary General, members and the EUCOBAT team in a small, international and member-driven environment.
Your profile
- You have senior-level experience in communication, preferably in an association, public affairs, sustainability, environmental, regulated-sector or member-driven environment.
- You have a genuine passion for the environment, circular economy and sustainability.
- You have a strong understanding of EU policy processes, sustainability topics or regulated sectors.
- You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; additional European languages are an asset.
- You combine a strong strategic mindset with hands-on execution skills.
- You are able to translate complex topics into clear, compelling and audience-specific messages.
- You are comfortable working in an international, member-driven organization with diverse stakeholders and cultures.
- You are able to work closely within a small team and take ownership in a broad, visible role.
- You can handle multiple tasks, set priorities effectively and remain structured under pressure.
- You have strong interpersonal skills and communicate with credibility, tact and clarity.
Extra valuable qualifications
- Experience working with associations, public bodies, EU institutions, public affairs consultancies or member-based organizations is a strong advantage.
- Understanding of extended producer responsibility, batteries, battery collection, battery recycling and re-use is a strong asset.
- Experience with digital communication platforms, publications, campaigns, newsletters, social media and event communication will help you succeed in the role.
