Freelance Hands-on Strategic Procurement Consultant ...

For a customer in Mechelen, we are searching for a freelance Procurement Consultant to support a major strategic transformation initiative linked to the development of a new manufacturing facility in Spain. The consultant will play a key role in managing strategic indirect procurement activities, with a strong focus on CAPEX-related sourcing, facilities management, engineering services, and the development of new primary packaging solutions.

This role is highly strategic and commercially driven, requiring hands-on procurement expertise in supplier negotiations, contract management, tendering processes, and supplier evaluation frameworks. Operational purchasing activities such as order placement and day-to-day coordination are managed by the Operations department and are outside the scope of this role.

Responsibilities

Strategic Indirect & CAPEX Procurement (Approx. 60%)

• Lead strategic sourcing and procurement activities related to:
• Facilities and engineering services
• Construction and infrastructure contracts
• CAPEX investments linked to the new factory development in Spain
• Manage complex tendering and negotiation processes with engineering companies and construction partners
• Develop and execute procurement strategies to optimize cost, quality, delivery, and risk
• Negotiate commercial agreements and track contractual changes throughout project execution

Primary Packaging Development

• Support procurement activities related to the development of new primary packaging solutions
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure alignment with technical and business requirements
• Source and evaluate suppliers capable of supporting innovative packaging initiatives

ESG & Supplier Evaluation Frameworks (Approx. 20%)

• Develop and implement ESG-focused procurement frameworks within tendering and supplier evaluation processes
• Define supplier assessment criteria related to sustainability, compliance, and responsible sourcing
• Support the integration of ESG standards into procurement decision-making and supplier management practices

Strategic Supplier & Commodity Management

Support sourcing activities related to:

• Third-party finished products
• Commodities
• Syringes and related medical components
• Address procurement challenges linked to pricing volatility and inventory management through strategic supplier engagement and commercial negotiations

Profile

• Proven experience in strategic procurement or procurement consulting within industrial, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, medical device, or engineering environments
• Strong background in indirect procurement and CAPEX sourcing
• Experience managing construction, engineering, or facilities-related contracts
• Demonstrated expertise in supplier negotiations, tender management, and contract development
• Exposure to ESG procurement frameworks and supplier sustainability evaluation
• Strong commercial mindset with the ability to operate both strategically and hands-on
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced transformation or project-based environment

Scope of the Role

This is a strategic procurement role focused on sourcing, negotiations, supplier strategy, and contract management. Operational procurement activities, including purchase order placement and day-to-day supplier coordination, are managed separately by the Operations department. The customer is not searching for a Category Manager.
