Hydraulic Engineer

As a hydraulic engineer your daily work falls within the activities of the HYDRO cell of the EDT-department (Engineering, Design & Technology) within the DEME Dredging and Reclamation activity line. We actively engage in cross-collaboration with other activity lines, such as offshore and infrastructure, and provide support to them to enhance project integration and broaden our operational impact. This team investigates a wide variety of hydraulic aspects related to dredging, reclamation and coastal construction activities, such issues related to coastal engineering, the design of coastal structures (breakwaters, revetments, shoreline protections, etc.), metocean and workability analyses, hydro- and morphodynamical analyses and CFD (computational fluid dynamics) studies. The tasks for this position relate more particularly to the latter two aspects (hydro- and morphodynamical analyses and CFD).
You will need to perform complex calculations and will be using various tools and numerical modelling software to study questions from our projects and tenders in the field of waves, flow, morphology, fluid-structure interaction, fluid dynamics, etc. These models include flow models, wave models, CFD models & morphodynamic models. Examples of numerical models we use in our team are SWAN, SWASH, Delft3D, XBeach, STAR-CCM+, OpenFOAM and many more. Other hydraulic studies may be part of your tasks depending on the need within the HYDRO-team.
You will work as a part of the EDT team in our HQ in Zwijndrecht, near Antwerp (Belgium). Close follow-up, coaching and guidance will be provided by senior colleagues in our team.
Next to Hydraulic engineering, the EDT team in activity line Dredging provides support as well in Geology, Geotechnics, Production Engineering, Environmental engineering and Wear &Tear expertise. This makes the EDT team highly divers in expertise and as such complementary to cover many expert aspects in supporting our projects.Your responsibilities
  • Set up and run hydro- and morphodynamical numerical models to support projects and tenders and R&D initiatives

  • Using models to study wave propagation, wave penetration into ports, structure-wave interactions, etc.

  • Using models to study flow patterns and impacts of our works on these patterns.

  • Using morphodynamical models and tools to study sedimentation, beach erosion, coastline reorientation, etc.

  • Set up and run CFD models serving a wide variety of applications, such as fluid/wave-structure interaction, flow in dredge pipes & pumps, scour around offshore structures, vessel motions etc.

  • Perform analyses of (large sets of) metocean data as input to weather downtime assessments, structure design, hydro- and morphodynamical calculations or numerical models.

  • Develop and propose innovative designs like nature based designs

  • Explore and optimize novel installation techniques

  • Develop sustainable solutions for the hydraulic design assignments you are working on.

  • Increase operational efficiency by applying numerical model tools

  • Reporting of the studies you perform.

  • Follow-up of specialized consultants that perform numerical modelling studies

  • Advise tender or project teams on hydraulic design aspects, both during the preparation and the execution of our projects worldwide.

  • For tenders and projects with a large hydraulic/coastal engineering scope, you can also become (temporary) part of those teams.

  • You will be based in our head office and work mainly in Belgium, but short missions abroad will be part of your job.

Your profile
  • BSc or MSc in Civil Engineering with a specialization in construction, coastal or marine engineering.

  • This position is ideally suited for a recent graduate or early-career professional. However, applicants with several years of relevant experience are encouraged to apply, as this may be considered a plus.

  • Motivated to work with coastal engineering tools & numerical modelling software (such as wave models, CFD models, etc.)

  • Experienced in using programming tools such as Matlab and/or Python

  • Experience in visualization tools such as ParaView is nice to have

  • Fluent in verbal and written Dutch and English.

  • Strong analytical skills with a critical view towards the tasks to be carried out;

  • You are creative, pro-active, well-structured and openminded and like working in teams (of different disciplines).

Our offer
  • An extensive mobility program for a healthy work-life balance

  • A permanent training track which allows you to develop yourself personally and professionally

  • A stimulating, innovative workplace with numerous growth opportunities
